I recently wrote an article about 7 of the best electric car deals in America – good, attractive, modern electric cars at basically affordable prices. In the article, I noted that I didn’t take the range into account because every current electric car, in my opinion, has enough range in home or workplace charging that differences in range don’t really matter, and I don’t like to feed the narrative that range is a big deal. However…
Some readers indicated that range is important to them and would like to see a comparison that examines the best power offerings. So, I decided I would compile the data, crunch the numbers, and see what models emerged.
Now, to do this right, I had to collect a lot of data. I had to get prices and range ratings for every trim of every model. There can be big differences in price and range between different trims. Below is a list of winners. However, before I share that, there are some important caveats: 1) prices are MSRP only—what you might actually be able to get at a dealer may vary greatly from MSRP, 2) several factors significantly affect EV range, and these vary significantly between EPA-based estimates and 3) automakers have significant differences in EPA range ratings. We don’t live in Lab and YMMV (your mileage may vary). With all that, even America has the best electric car deals in terms of dollar cost per mile of range.
- Nissan Leaf S+ – $99/mile
- Chevy Equinox EVLT 1 – $105/mile
- Chevy Bolt LT – 2 112/mile
- Tesla Model 3 Standard – $115/mile
- Tesla Model 3 Premium RWD – 7 117/mile
- Nissan Leaf SV+ – $119/mile
- Chevy Bolt RS – 4 124/mile
- Tesla Model Y Standard – $125/mile
- Hyundai Ioniq 6 SE – $125/mile
- Tesla Model Y Premium RWD – 6 126/mile
- Chevy Equinox EVLT 2 – 1 131/mi
- Chevy Equinox EVRS – 6 136/mile
- Tesla Model 3 Premium AWD – 7 137/mile
- Ford Mustang Mach-E Select ER-1 141/mile
- Hyundai Kona EV Sale – 2 142/mile
- Chevy Blazer EVLT – 3 143/mile
- Ford Mustang Mach E Premium ER-5 145/mile
- Toyota BZ4X Limited – 5 145/mile
- KIA EV6 Lite LR RWD – 5 145/mile
- Ford Mustang Mach-E Select SR-6 146/mile
So, the 2026 Nissan Leaf is a truly amazing trim, especially the S+ trim that’s the only option under $100/mile. The low-cost Chevy Equinox EVLT and Chevy Bolt EVLT also make the podium. And overall in the top 10 or top 20 you’ve got a series of vehicles that you think are good deals – good value for money. I think perhaps to my surprise, the Ford Mustang Mach E performed very well. But when you look at the rather low price of this vehicle, it’s not really surprising.
I’m just happy that my favorite model, the EV6, barely made the list.
