I visited the exhibition at the Manchester Museum last week and enjoyed it so much that I thought I would have some ideas about it here.
Many congratulations to Dr. Campbell Price (full revelation: she’s a friend!), I thought it was very good. First of all, this material is terrific, of course, especially, especially the magnificent mummies, and all of it is accidentally from Manchester Collection. Exhibitions are not overwhelmed by the number of labels that are comprehensive and mutilated. And are printed in large fonts (!) To read, which gives you the necessary information but feels like-a blockbuster for exposure to-new, unusual and progressive ideas: Greco-Romi Agept; Conflict in this period of various beliefs, methods and style of growing diverse population. During the British colonial rule collecting Manchester and removing content from Egypt; Dubious ideas of Fillyers Patri (Central Excavator), Amelia Edwards and others about what Mimi can tell us about ancient people. No X-ray or facial reconstruction (made for death-no pin intended! -And-limited value); Don’t focus on what biology reveals about the earthly lives of ancient people, but instead of what they think about, mother affairs, painting, etc. tell us what people have hoped in eternal life.
The book which is also excellent with the exhibition.
It will be very progressive for some people, and others are not progressive enough but it is perfectly noticeable to me: ‘Golden’ and ‘Mummy’ are enough to bring people in – it’s already very famous, and whoever wants to see beautiful things, there is a lot to enjoy with a lot of thought – but many people will think about it. Here are some really important and very relevant issues. This debate should be accessible to reach the mainstream, and not only the protection of the smart and angry experts. Messages are soft here, but they Are There and they may have already reached thousands of people. Exhibition is a victory, go and see it if you can! The tickets are free but you have to make a booking here already.
