Jean -Mark is a famous lecturer on the topics of energy and climate change in France and on YouTube. He focuses on the deep history and cohesion of land consumption equipment – how things are made, what things are made, how energy is produced, distributed and burned, and how future energy needs should be met.
Christophe Black is a French graphic artist known for his comedy historical works, especially Mass Diplomacy weapons. But a few years ago, he was subjected to current events in his home country.
“In the summer of 2018, there were severe waves in the summer of 2018.” I realized that they were associated with global warming. I said to myself, ‘This is, we are here.’ I was very upset for a year.
He began to talk to his brother what could be done. His brother had been following the lectures of Gencoisi for more than ten years, and he recommended that the Billion look something and possibly connect with Jinni.
“My brother told me, ‘Make an album with Jane Mark.’ I replied immediately. He said, ‘Do you have any choice?’ Five minutes later, I wrote an email to Jane Mark.

Is the result of this meeting of minds The world without the worldA full -length graphic book that combines the words of Genococci with the dynamic and humorous reflection of the billions to tell the energy story: Where we are, and where we will be the head. This is a long -shaped book version of one of his lectures, rich in statistics, theory and interpretation, which is pushed forward in a unique way of telling the visual story of the Billion in which a reader is never lost or overwhelmed. The book has been a thrilling in France, which sold more than a million copies, and a translated version has been released in the United States.
Billen shared some answers with Ekich by email.
How and why was the book so popular in France?
On social networks, I noticed that the people who followed Jane Mark all wanted to approve and know his views. As if this is an important need. I felt the same way.
I said to myself: A book is something that is easy to move from a conference. You can take your time fully to understand what is at stake. What happened was exactly what I hoped: those who read it wanted to give it and move it forward.
How much of an example / text process was it?
We will meet Jane Mark, and they were using their courses, its conferences and research with their company, Carbon 4. I ask him a lot of questions, we will comment on the current events, and I will take a lot of notes. Then I will work alone to turn my notes into a story board. We will meet again and fix our story board. Then we will start again.
What kind of challenges were the energy, energy history and climate topic presenting?
Jean Mark is an extraordinary teacher. He sometimes uses many poetic, entertaining images to explain complex concepts. If you do not understand one image, he uses another. He always gets it in the end. And everything is luminous. He makes you smart.

I sometimes like to use pictures to explain abstract concepts. I do a lot in my work. I like crazy, poetic photos, a little psychidic drawing to talk about a complex and subtle thing. Jean Mark and I understand each other very well. We had a lot of fun together.
You choose visual “comedy” to advance some parts – this helps to advance some sad facts – how did you manage to justify some wrong facts with such cartoon “jokes”?
Because I am a funny man. And I like to laugh at my problems. And because the book had to make fun. Always fluid, always hyper -understanding. This album is about serious, complex things. But I have worked hard to make it easier to read.
As you were giving an example of the book, what things did you learn?
I learned a lot from Jane Mark’s own attitude. He has been fighting this war for years. His patience, energy and determination attract me. I often get angry that I was fooled, facing the challenges facing the whole humanity. Jean Mark brought me back to the reasoning and patience, not to waste his energy in anger, but to find the right arguments.
What did you learn about the importance of energy?
I have learned that our lifestyle, even if we do not see it, even if we do not realize it, then the energy of the earth’s resources needs tremendous use.
Details about toothpaste tube and smart phones, and large -scale apparatus needed to make items everywhere … they were opening my eyes for me. How did you realize this learning?
I felt that we live in a far more delicate world than I think. Many details of our everyday life, which appear to be clear and unpredictable, can disappear much faster than we think.

Have you been surprised to find that “organic” is just a label that really has little effect on deep basic issues with the agricultural industry?
This is true for many other aspects. We live on a heavy industry. Some organic beans are a good thing. But you have to look at the entire production chain, which prepares for millions of people, using big resources, for the public.
How was this book “Therapy” for you? (On page 133, the Billion talks about his repeated dreams of nuclear accidents.)
Jean Mark told me that once you start looking for these problems, research them and work on them, you cannot stop. This is a permanent therapy through the process. Understanding is the first and most important step. Even if you don’t know how to work right now. We change despite ourselves. We see our surroundings differently. And then, a little, we take action in our daily life or extensively.
For example, we gradually stop desireing the same things. You organize your life differently. You have to accept that this is a step by step. There is no radical revolution that will solve all problems.
How does the world fit, compared to your other work?
My vision about the world is different and I can’t go back. And I’m continuing to work with Jane Mark.
Any other last words?
I sincerely hope to find an American audience who will welcome us. Not just because it will bring us success, but obviously America has a very powerful influence on the world. I have traveled there several times. It is a country that attracts me.
