The Georgia Public Service Commission last week approved five new power procurement contracts (PPA) for Georgia Power (PPA), which increased by more than a thousand megawatts of utility scale solar capacity across the state.
A part of the 2022 Integrated Resource Plan of Utility, through the company’s 2023 clean and renewable energy subscription (CARE) application, was selected as a total of 1,068 MW projects. Each facility will be constructed and operated by the Third Party Developers under the long -term PPA.
The Cares Program aims to have major commercial and industrial consumers who want to get their energy use with a renewable generation. Subscripts provide consumers with part in production with participation facilities.
Approved projects include:
- Mitchell County: 260 MW, 25 -year -old PPA
- Coffee County: 200 MW, 30 -year -old PPA
- Wilkinson County: 183 MW made 91.5 MW battery system, pair with 20 -year -old PPA
- Jefferson County: 200 MW, 20 -year -old PPA
- Lawrence County: 225 MW, 20 -year -old PPA
Georgia Power has issued a follow -up application, cars 2025 RFP, which is looking for additional solar or solar pulse storage resources up to 2,000 MW. Those projects can start operations in the early 2028.
The latest Utility Integrated Resource Plan, which has been approved in July, calls for a new 4,000 MW renewable resource by 2035. If fully realizes, Georgia Power’s renewable portfolio can increase to about 11,000 MW by 2035, compared to about 3,300 MW online today.
