Although different types of prisons like today in the Roman Empire may have been just as normal, archaeologists have discovered less than you expected. One of the main reasons for this is that most of the ancient prisons, such as many ordinary ancient buildings, did not have logs or signs identified by their purpose, leaving their function open for interpretation. In his article “Crime and Crime in Roman Corinths” published in the fall of 2025 Bible archeology reviewsMatthew Larson takes readers to search for a building on the fourth -century Corinths trip to a building that can really be identified as a Roman jail.

A rotating chamber is sitting in the northwestern region of the Roman Forum of Corinths, called today called Bodome (Turkey for “” basement “). Although initially as part of a row of similar structures, the chamber was built in the first or second century CE, but the larger part of the earthquake, but the fourth century. A series of smooth stones were laid.

When Bodromi was first excavated in 1901, archaeologists were surprised that an impressive number of graphtheys was found in smooth rocks. Although some grafts were simple gameboards or photos, others included long ashes. In these long writings, many materials were clearly religious, and many people cited the author’s imprisonment directly. Although the building does not label the prison, these references to the prison are clear evidence of the Boodromi’s late Roman Jail. Simultaneously, different graphs reflect the ideas and activities of people who have tried their day -to -day, whether through board games or appeal to the highest power of justice or revenge. Repeated Gracemical Mistakes of Shalhli suggest that they were often written by people of less social stance despite expressing complex religious messages.
Although the possibility of Bodromi was actually used for commercial purposes, renovation in the fourth century turned it into a prison site. The rest of the forum was added a wall to seal the main room. The room is accessible only through a narrow opening to allow light and food and a small lock door. Although archaeological records are difficult to find Roman prisons, perhaps the bodome will provide a new archaeological that can be used to identify further.
