Although different types of prisons like today in the Roman Empire may have been just as normal, archaeologists have discovered less than you expected. One of the main reasons for this is that most of the ancient prisons, such as many ordinary ancient buildings, did not have logs or signs identified by their purpose, leaving their function open for interpretation. In his article “Crime and Crime in Roman Corinths” published in the fall of 2025 Bible archeology reviewsMatthew Larson takes readers to search for a building on the fourth -century Corinths trip to a building that can really be identified as a Roman jail.

A rotating chamber is sitting in the northwestern region of the Roman Forum of Corinths, called today called Bodome (Turkey for “” basement “). When Bodromi was first excavated in 1901, archaeologists were surprised that an impressive number of graphtheys was found in smooth rocks. Although archaeological records are difficult to find Roman prisons, perhaps the bodome will provide a new archaeological that can be used to identify further.
