Archaeologists in Jerusalem have exposed the largest dam built in ancient Israel. According to the Kings Josh and Judah (at the end of the ninth century BC), the Dam may have rapidly renovated the city’s water system and tipography, which is now known as the Selom Pond. But how does this dam belong to other parts of the city’s ancient water system, and how does the Bible change our thinking style about the development of Jerusalem?

To distort flood waters

Archaeologists, along with the Israeli artifacts authority, revealed the dam during the excavation work at the proposed site of Salom Pool in the city of David Archeology. “This is the largest dam in Israel so far and is the oldest event in Jerusalem,” said Directors of the excavation, Nahishun Szantan, Atmar Berco, and Philip Volkosovoi in a press release. “Its dimensions are noteworthy: about 40 40 feet height, more than 26 feet width, and the length length reaches 69 feet. It is beyond the excavation limits.”

It was built near the southeast of the southeastern letter of ancient Jerusalem, the dam developed an artificial reservoir, which stopped the water, which went to the Dead Sea under the Tyropoon Valley. With extra water turning from the Salom Channel (and later by the tunnel of Hezekiah), the reservoir may have stored a huge amount of water, which produces a massive pond that is usually identified as a sealum pool (though some do not excavated).

However, since the Salom Pool was well used in the Roman era, the early history of the construction of the dam remains a matter. Using high -precision radio carbon dating techniques, a team of scientists at the Wezman Institute came to a surprising conclusion: the construction of the dam was from the ninth century BC at the end of the ninth century BC, during the reign of the King of Judah.

Comparing the history of the dam with climate data, the team suggests that the dam was built to help overcome the short -term fluctuations in the rain. These volatility would include less rainfall over many years, as well as short episodes of heavy rainfall, resulting in flooding. The dam worked to reduce the damage caused by water shortages and floods.

During the Iron Age II (C. According to researchers, who published their searches in the journal The action of the National Academy of SciencesDating, dating can challenge current ideas about dating these other structures. Although both the spring tower and the salum channels are often attributed to the middle brass age (2000-1550 BC), some scholars have built their tenth or ninth century BC instead. If the latter was accepted, it could mean that the dam, the Spring Tower and the Slom Channel were all part of the same memorable construction project aimed at rapidly changing the city’s water system.

But not all scholars are convinced of this assumption. As said, Chris McCain, an associate professor of Bible Archaeological at the University of Lipuscumb. Bible History daily“I still think that it makes the most realized that the spring tower and salum channel were initially built in the middle of the middle bronze and remained in use until the end of the eighth century BC.”

Nevertheless, McCain and other archaeologists were influenced by the discovery. “In the late ninth and eighth centuries, the new dam dating is incredibly important to our understanding of several important topics related to Jerusalem. The number of big discoveries in David city over the past decade is amazing.

McKini was particularly quick to highlight that recent discoveries in the city of David have shown that the ancient Jerusalem had begun to expand and increase power and influence.
