Scientists at the Advanced Science Research Center at the CUNY Graduate Center (CUNY ASRC) have discovered a way to control sound and voice using a concept affected by “twistronics”, which is actually a phenomenon for electronics.

His research, published in the journal pnasIntroducing “Twistalatics” – a technique that uses small rotations between layers of engineer surfaces to manipulate how to travel to mechanical waves.

Sounds and vibration control are essential for technologies such as ultrasound imaging, micro electronics, and advanced sensors. Traditionally, these systems rely on fixed designs, limiting flexibility. The new approach allows engineers to re -establish wave behavior by rotating two layers of engineer surfaces, enabling extraordinary adaptations.

To meet their progress, the team combined the theory, computer simulation and experiments using 3D printed proto -type to design special levels called metastorphosis, which were developed with microscope pillars.

When two similar metastorphosis are stacked and rotated at different angles than one another, their joint structure changes the way the vibration is spreading. At the angle of a critical rotation, the name of the “magic angle”, the waves are highly concentrated and guided, which opens up the possibility of fast, more effective signal processing.

The introduction of Twistalatics will allow maximum control over broadband signals in a wide range of frequency, and will enable the wave behavior to adjust faster, which will improve information delivery. The new technique will also facilitate the design of high -resistance systems due to fabricated flaws.

Researchers predict applying medical imaging, consumer electronics, and micro -fluidics. Twistlasts can eventually be manufactured by mining of chip -scale equipment, and revolutionizing how we add sound and vibration to everyday technology.
