Sustainable ways to reduce food -related emissions in half

The food system is about 30 % of greenhouse gas emissions globally. According to a report released by a commission of global experts from more than 35 countries in six continents on October 3, their emissions can be reduced to more than half.

A team of corneal researchers led the modeling section of the report on a healthy, sustainable and justice food system.Lancer The commission presents the most comprehensive global scientific evaluation of the food system and how they affect climate change to date. The Cornell team runs the model’s impressions to discover how the food system can be seen by 2050.

Research has revealed that the food system has the most negative effect on five of the nine major global processes – known as the “limits of planets” in the field of climate change. It regulates the stability and flexibility of the earth.

“It is very important to have a more sustainable future and move forward with cooperation like Et Lancet,” said Mario Hariro and Cornell Attockson Scholar, a global development professor at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). “Playing a leading role in this international network allows researchers to learn from the co -operation of both and the change of different driving food systems.”

The study also found that more than half of the world’s population struggles to access a healthy diet, and that diet changes can prevent 15 million premature deaths every year. Meanwhile, the most 30 % of people run more than 70 % of the eating environmental impact, and although the world has enough food to feed, but more than 1 billion people suffer from nutrition.

To overcome these challenges, the report outlines eight possible solutions. These include reducing food and waste, implementing sustainable agriculture methods, protecting traditional healthy diets, and changing the ecosystem in agriculture.

The heroes, who served as members and commissioners of the Executive Committee in this report, and their team created many scenarios to assess the potential impact of the current and future food system on the boundaries of nine planets.

Modeling shows that the change of food system can substantially reduce environmental pressures with the limits of all the planets related to food, according to Daniel Mason de Cros, according to the lead by the Senior Research Associate and Modeling Team in the CAL.

“But if nutritional changes are not improved, such as increasing agricultural productivity and decreasing dietary reduction, this will not allow us to get environmentally sustainable food systems,” said Mason D. “Future work will now need to focus on developing a roadmap to achieve a more sustainable future.”

The report states that changing the way a person develops and is used in it can improve global health, achieve food and nutritional safety, create stability and flexibility, and has a critical strategy for improving equity and work conditions in the food system by 2050.

“This research provides significant insights that help policy makers, governments and corporations make informed decisions, while also helping individuals understand the implications of their diet and our food system,” said Cornell Attockson Center for Strategic Partnership for Strategic Partnership.
