Uruk – The city of the hero Gilgamesh with a sophisticated, carefully, and deliberately planned layout

The oldest settlement at this place was built during the period of Ubaid (5000 BC). Between 4000 and 3000 BC, Uruk became the most extensive and influential city in Mesopotamia. Initially, it occupied about 100 hectares (one square kilometer) and expanded to about 400 hectares.
