Connie Waters – AncientPages.com – Lullabies are gentle bedtime songs that are lovingly used to help babies relax and drift off into a restful sleep, and they beautifully reflect the care and comfort of every child. Every child deserves to feel safe, loved, and comforted while resting.

What many people don’t realize is that the origins and meanings of some lullabies can be quite disturbing. Lullabies date back thousands of years, and versions of these songs can be found in cultures around the world.
Research on lullabies has shown that not all of them are gentle or comfortable in their themes. As one expert on the subject tells us, some contain dark or disturbing imagery that reflects the fears, struggles, or social conditions of the time in which they were created. These hidden meanings are rarely discussed when we’re children, and learning about them later can change how we think about songs we once found comforting.
Having said that, let us also appreciate the many beautiful lullabies that exist, for example, the lullabies performed by the Sami people, that have a unique and special meaning for each child.
