According to Mark Fairchild, Nesia was the first council where St. Nofitos was killed outside the walls of the city of Nesia. Mark Fairchild by photo.
The early comments of the new belief, the Nessine profession, is a fundamental document for all major Christian sects. In one of the most fruitful statements, he recognized Jesus as a divine and the same substance with the Father of God. It was adopted by the first Nicea Council in 325 CE. But where in Nisia?
Writing for the fall of 2025 Bible archeology reviewsMark R. Fairchild reveals two important indicators that can eventually help solve this mystery. A retired professor of Bible study at Huntington University and a Helenstic and Roman period expert in Asia Minor, Fairchide, took a review of Nesia’s first council from the fourth -century church, who was discovered in Nesia (modernizon in northwestern Turkey).

In his article, “Where was Nesia’s first council?” Fairchild first offers what Caesarea and Church’s historian Yusibus Bishop says about the location of the Church Assembly, in which he personally participated. Writing about the initial sessions of the Council, UCBIs say they were in a “house”, ie a church. According to his witnesses’ account, the venue was slightly smaller until, “as if it was raised by God,” it managed to accommodate all the church honors. The closing sessions were then transferred to the Emperor Constantine’s palace inside the city. The only leading church of the fourth century in the city is the so -called water under bacterica, the recent discovery in which it was covered Bible archeology reviews And a PBS documentary film contains 3D entertainment of the monument. Can this be the location of the first session of the first council of Nicea?

In the same way, Basilica is not located inside the walls of the ancient city. Although it was actually standing on the coast of Lake Azk (Lake Scania, Antiquities), it was later swallowed with the growing water of the lake and was only seen in 2014 through aerial photography. As its modern mankar has revealed, the ruins of the church are mostly submerged, which are the challenges of archaeological searching. But why was this church first built outside the city walls?
A large number of nails were recovered from the underwater, toward the existence of a large wooden structure – the original church of the first council of Nicea. Photo courtesy Mustafa şahin.
After several seasons of excavation, which had already begun in 2015, archaeologists now believe that the large structure that appears today has begun as a small martyr. It is a shrine that respects a Christian martyr. We know from written sources that in 303, just a decade before the Emperor Constitine’s Christianity was the end of St. Nofitos was martyred on the coast of Lake Scania (see the first picture above). Possibly of his death immediately. Later on the spot a manufactured shrine was set up and it is consistent with the small rectangular structure saved under the larger bactericular.

When Christianity was given legal status, in 313, this initial sanctity was increased and the church must have been in which Yusbius mentioned the location of Nesia’s first council in 325. While the initial shrine was built with stone, however, it was largely built with a new basilica wood, which can be recovered with wood and a large number of nails. Finally, the Baselica was rebuilt in the stone, before it fell into the earthquake in the 11th century and swallowed from the lake.
