Ellen Lloyd – AncientPages.com – History is written by the survivors—and the survivors absolutely hated the Vikings.
For more than a thousand years, our view of the Norsemen (Northmen) has been shaped by frightened monks and priests who suffered most from their raids. To these writers, the Vikings were not just enemies. They were seen as filthy, godless beasts sent from hell.

This centuries-old smear campaign was highly effective. Today, when most people think of a Viking, they picture a towering, bloodthirsty savage waving a double-edged axe and screaming at the top of their lungs.

The raids did happen, but the wild image of Vikings is just a myth. In reality, the Northmen were skilled navigators, active traders, and cultured people whose real story has been hidden by history.
We are finally setting the record straight. Below, we dismantle some of the greatest, most deeply embedded misconceptions about Viking history—and reveal who the Northmen actually were.
